The SUS etching specification is a scale for encoders made from stainless steel through photo-etching processing. While it is not intended for high resolution, it can be produced relatively inexpensively. The shapes available are linear scales and disk plates (i.e., rotary slit plates), and they are only transmissive. (Reflective types are available in hybrid etching specifications.)
